Ingredients
  

Main Ingredients
  • 1 lb Italian sausage (ground) cracked into small pieces
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 12 oz ziti pasta uncooked
  • 1 cup marinara sauce jarred or homemade
  • 1 cup water or broth for sauce
Cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan
Seasonings
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • to taste salt
  • to taste black pepper
Optional Garnish
  • to taste fresh basil leaves chopped

Method
 

Steps
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add olive oil until shimmering.
  2. Sauté diced onion and minced garlic until onion becomes translucent, about 3 minutes.
  3. Add the ground sausage, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, and cook until browned and crumbly. Drain excess grease.
  4. Stir in marinara sauce and a splash of water or broth; simmer for 5 minutes to meld flavors.
  5. Boil salted water in a large pot, cook ziti until just shy of al dente (about 7 minutes), then drain.
  6. Combine pasta with sausage‑sauce mixture in a large baking dish; top with mozzarella, Parmesan, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper.
  7. Cover with foil and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 5 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  8. Let rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) until heated through, about 20 minutes.
